Walk on White: A Monthly Key West Art Stroll with Local Flavor
August 18, 2025 • KW Concierge
Every third Thursday of the month, Key West’s White Street transforms into a lively hub of creativity, music, and culture. From 6 to 9 p.m., Walk on White invites locals and visitors alike to wander through the White Street Arts District, discovering the vibrant soul of the island one gallery, studio, and café at a time.
A Tradition with Deep Roots
What began in 1998 as a simple holiday art walk has grown into a beloved monthly celebration that helped establish White Street as Key West’s arts district. Originally designed to promote local galleries, Walk on White has expanded into a cultural cornerstone, spotlighting not just artists, but an entire community of businesses and neighbors.
This year’s season, presented by Coldwell Banker Schmitt Real Estate and Zintsmaster & Team, promises more energy than ever. More than 25 businesses between the Historic Armory at Southard Street and United Street are on board, turning the event into a lively neighborhood festival that blends art with local enterprise.
What to Expect Along the Walk
Your stroll kicks off at the Historic Armory, a landmark that houses artist studios, the Fringe Theater, and has the distinction of being the birthplace of The Studios of Key West. From there, the half-mile stretch to United Street is lined with galleries, open studios, and specialty shops. Expect opening receptions, pottery-throwing demonstrations, hands-on art, live music, and even complimentary drinks as you pop in and out of venues.
Not-to-miss stops include:
-
The Studios at the Armory
-
Stone Soup Gallery
-
Harrison Gallery
-
Shade Ceramics & Shutter Photography
-
Coffee Mill Dance Studio
-
Gallery 1:11
-
Native Materials, Erika Heffernan, and Bone Island Graphics
Alongside these cultural gems are historic landmarks that add depth to your walk. Keep an eye out for the 19th-century Military Burial Grounds, the Elizabeth Bishop Home, and the island’s oldest house on White Street, dating back to 1850.
More Than Just Art
The event has grown beyond galleries—restaurants, salons, retail shops, and even fitness studios now join in the fun. Hungry wanderers are spoiled for choice with international eateries sprinkled along White Street. Grab pierogi at Pierogi Market Place, Mediterranean flavors at Oasis, Cuban sandwiches at Sandy’s Café, Creole specialties at Mo’s, or a sweet treat at Key West Cakes before they close for the night.
A Community Celebration
What makes Walk on White special isn’t just the art—it’s the sense of community. Whether it’s a bike parade in May for American Bike Month, live music spilling out of gallery doors, or themed events benefiting local organizations, there’s always something fresh and engaging waiting for you.
For travelers, it’s the perfect way to experience Key West beyond Duval Street. Here, you’ll mingle with locals, connect with artists, and uncover a slice of island life that’s equal parts creative and welcoming.
So, if you find yourself in Key West on a Thursday evening, skip the tourist trail and take a stroll down White Street. With art, history, food, and friendly faces around every corner, Walk on White is more than an event—it’s an experience that feeds both the soul and the senses.
Pack your bags, bring your curiosity, and let White Street show you why Key West is a masterpiece in motion.
