Key West’s “Conch Honk” Brings a Blast of Fun on March 8
January 27, 2025 • KW Concierge
Ever wanted to make music with a seashell? In Key West, they take that dream to a whole new level. On Saturday, March 8, locals and visitors alike will “blow their own horns” at the 62nd annual Conch Shell Blowing Contest, a quirky, only-in-the-Keys tradition that celebrates the island’s seafaring past.
Blowing into a conch shell—pronounced “konk”—dates back centuries, once used by Native Americans, shipwreck salvagers, and 19th-century sailors as a signaling device. Today, the conch shell remains a beloved symbol of the Florida Keys, where locals proudly call themselves “conchs” and savor conch chowder and fritters.
This year’s contest kicks off at noon in the Oldest House Museum’s lush garden (322 Duval St.), with hopeful honkers attempting to impress judges and a lively crowd. While some participants will produce little more than a sputter, others may surprise with melodic tunes—even classic rock riffs or intricate musical pieces!
The event is free and open to all ages, with gates opening at 10:30 a.m. for conch-blowing lessons, local crafts, and delicious island eats. Ready to join the fun? Sign up at oirf.org or just show up and soak in the island’s legendary spirit.
Pack your bags, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready for a blast—literally! 🌴🎺✨
