“Just a Few Friends Key West” Jimmy Buffett Memorial Event Set for Labor Day Weekend
June 10, 2024 • KW Concierge
Grab your flip-flops and margaritas, folks! The Key West City Commission has officially declared December 25th as "Favorite Son of the Conch Republic Day" to honor the legendary Jimmy Buffett. Thanks to local enthusiast Paul Menta and Mayor Teri Johnston, this tribute celebrates Buffett's lasting impact on Key West's culture and economy, from his early days at Crazy Ophelia's and Captain Tony's to his global stardom.
But that's not all! The City Commission has also approved a city-wide celebration of Jimmy's legacy over Labor Day weekend, from August 29th to September 2nd, 2024. Expect a jam-packed schedule with themed events, dinners, sailing trips, tours, contests, and live performances at iconic Key West spots that Buffett and his fans cherish.
Mark your calendars for the main event on Sunday, September 1 at 5pm—a vibrant walking 'second line' parade down Duval Street, ending at Truman Waterfront Park with a free concert and festival. For a $30 donation, you can snag a commemorative Parade Pass, with proceeds supporting local causes dear to Jimmy's heart, like the Bahama Village Music Program and Reef Relief.
Whether you're in Key West or tuning in from afar, everyone can join the party! Your donation includes access to special perks from local partners and the chance to celebrate virtually with fellow Parrot Heads worldwide.
"We're excited to kick off the first It's 5 o'clock Key West celebration for Jimmy Buffett, an icon cherished by locals and fans everywhere," said Menta. "Join us this Labor Day weekend for an unforgettable tribute to this beloved Conch Republic ambassador."
