A Treasure Trove of History Awaits
The lectures, held every Tuesday from January 28 through February 25 at 6:30 p.m., take place at the museum’s home on 200 Greene Street. Known worldwide for its role in unearthing and preserving maritime history, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum boasts an unrivaled collection of 17th-century artifacts, including priceless treasures from the legendary Spanish galleons Nuestra Señora de Atocha and Santa Margarita. These sunken vessels, discovered off Key West, hold the kind of mystery and allure that sparks the imagination.
What’s in Store for Attendees?
The series kicks off on January 28 with the mini-documentary Before Juneteenth: Florida’s Emancipations. Dr. Corey Malcom, a renowned historian, will shed light on Key West’s pivotal role in the mid-1800s push for emancipation—a slice of history not often highlighted in traditional narratives.
On February 4, scholar and activist Dinizulu Gene Tinnie takes the stage to discuss the gripping story of the Cuban slaving vessel Amistad and its impact on the maritime slave trade. If you’ve ever wondered about Key West’s role in the U.S. Navy’s anti-slavery efforts, this session will provide intriguing insights.
February 11 dives even deeper—literally. Dr. Malcom returns for an insider tour of the museum’s latest exhibition, Uncovering the Santa Clara. This rare 16th-century shipwreck, excavated under his leadership, comes to life through displayed artifacts and a behind-the-scenes peek at the museum’s conservation lab.
On February 18, author Carol Tedesco will guide attendees through the twists and turns of Spanish Colonial shipwreck cargoes, showcasing the mesmerizing story of silver coins and other relics recovered from the Atocha and Santa Margarita.
The series wraps up with a bang on February 25, when members of the legendary “golden crew” that uncovered the Atocha and Margarita treasures share firsthand tales of their historic discoveries. Tom Ford, Syd Jones, Andy Matroci, and Vince Trotta will reveal what it was like to recover one of the world’s greatest collections of sunken Spanish treasure.
