The College of the Florida Keys presents the Swim Around Key West, a breathtaking 12.5-mile journey through crystal-clear waters, showcasing the scenic beauty of the iconic island. Whether you're a seasoned swimmer or a first-time competitor, this event offers something for everyone.
Main Event: Swim Around Key West – 12.5-Mile Challenge
On June 14, 2025, swimmers will embark on a clockwise loop around Key West, beginning and ending at Smathers Beach. Participants will navigate stunning waterways, including the Key West Harbor, Fleming Key Bridge, and Cow Key Bridge, with support and safety crews ensuring a secure and unforgettable experience. Competitors will swim through both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, encountering diverse aquatic life—and maybe even a mermaid!
Categories include:
- Solo swimmers (with or without fins, monofins, or mermaid tails)
- Relay teams of 2 to 6 participants, with or without fins
Smaller Race Options
For those seeking a shorter swim, the event also features additional open-water races:
- 6.2-mile swim
- 2-mile swim

- Packet Pickup: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM at the College of the Florida Keys Pool
- Solo swimmers and one team representative can collect race materials
- Rules and course maps will be reviewed
- Coconut Painting: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
- Mermaid Shows: 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM
- Don’t miss the chance to transform into a mermaid or merman after the show!
Saturday, June 14, 2025 – Race Day
- Check-In: 8:30 AM – 9:15 AM at Smathers Beach
- Race Start: 9:30 AM sharp
- Award Ceremony: 5:30 PM at Smathers Beach

Safety & Comfort
With water temperatures ranging from 78°F to 84°F, this warm-water swim offers ideal conditions. Lifeguards and safety boats with event flags will be stationed throughout the course, ensuring a safe environment for all participants. Each swimmer or team must have an escort craft, such as a kayak or motorboat, to guide them through the course.
