The Tennessee Williams Museum in Key West celebrates the life and legacy of one of America’s most influential playwrights. Tennessee Williams, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and author of classics such as The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, called Key West home for more than thirty years. His time on the island shaped both his personal life and literary career, leaving behind a cultural footprint that continues to define Key West’s reputation as a hub for the arts.

The museum offers visitors an in-depth look at Williams’ remarkable career through an extensive collection of first edition plays and books, rare photographs, original typewriters, vintage articles, and a scale model of his Duncan Street home. Multimedia exhibits and artifacts highlight not only his international acclaim but also his deep ties to the local community. The museum is fully air-conditioned, ADA compliant, and offers intimate spaces, including a garden setting available for private events.

Current exhibits, such as But I Work Best Here: Tennessee Williams in Key West, showcase the playwright’s creative journey and his decades-long connection to the island. This exhibit features the largest public collection of Tennessee Williams memorabilia and continues to grow with new donations and acquisitions.

The legacy of Tennessee Williams is also honored through the annual Tennessee Williams Key West Festival, held every March. This month-long celebration features a variety of cultural events, including poetry and short story contests, plein air painting competitions, film screenings, lectures, live theater, and a festive birthday party in honor of the celebrated author.

A visit to the Tennessee Williams Museum provides a unique opportunity to appreciate the life and works of a literary giant while connecting with the cultural history of Key West. This landmark continues to serve as both a museum and gathering space dedicated to preserving and sharing the extraordinary story of Tennessee Williams.
