Experience a true piece of island history at the Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House, a national landmark dating back to 1891. Located at 281 Front Street in the heart of Old Town and adjacent to Mallory Square, this striking red-brick structure was once the epicenter for federal customs operations and court proceedings. Today, it showcases two floors of engaging exhibits spanning two centuries of Key West’s vibrant past, including art collections, historical artifacts, and tales of shipwrecks, rum runners, and notable events such as the sinking of the USS Maine in 1898.

Visitors can explore the meticulously restored building, recognized by its iconic architecture and carefully preserved original materials. Admission fees are designed to accommodate a range of guests: $17 for adults ($15.50 online), $13 for seniors, locals, students, and retired military ($11.50 online), and $9 for youth ages 7–18 ($7.50 online). Children under 7 and active military can enter free of charge. The museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m., and is fully air-conditioned and ADA compliant to ensure a comfortable experience.

The museum’s Helmerich Trust Research & Learning Center offers a versatile space for meetings or small events, while the wraparound veranda provides an elegant setting for wedding photos. Originally constructed at a fraction of its modern renovation costs, the building underwent a $9 million restoration beginning in 1993, following exacting historical guidelines to transform it into a hub that now welcomes more than 300,000 visitors each year.

Whether exploring Key West’s fascinating maritime legacy, viewing curated art exhibitions, or seeking a unique venue rental in an architectural gem, this museum promises an unforgettable cultural experience. Discover why it is often referred to as the “crown jewel” of Key West and enjoy an immersive journey through the island’s storied heritage.
