The Waterfront Playhouse will present “The Red Head Dilemma,” an interactive children’s musical for ages 6 to 12 that has been created by the Key West Children’s Theatre Company. “The Red Head Dilemma” will play Saturday mornings at 11:00, November 8, 15, 22 & 29. Tickets are ONLY $1 for children and $5 for adults! There are no reservations, but general seating and cash payment is requested. Doors will open at 10:30. For more details, please go to www.waterfrontplayhouse.org. or call 294-5015.

“The Red Head Dilemma” is a new musical that tells the tale of Red Head City, an imaginary society where red hair and all things red are essential. All is well in the Red Head City until a non-red haired stranger shows up. The stranger’s fate is then decided by the audience. The musical was written by Kyle Caskey and David Black, who also star, along with Valerie Carr, Jennifer Cohen, Carolyn Cooper, Joan O’Dowd and Scott Zimmerman. Michael Aaglan directs with choreography by Carolyn Cooper. The original score is by Michael Fauss. The set is by Michael Boyer and the fanciful costumes are by Sushi.

The Waterfront Playhouse would like to acknowledge with our deepest thanks the generous donations from Suzie and Nick Trivisonno and the Dogwood Foundation that have underwritten this production.

Key West Heritage House presents a series of events inspired by the Great Depression through art, lectures, walking tours and the premiere of an oral history film documentary.

The series opens with “WPA Artists: Inspired by the Depression,” a special exhibit of recently restored Depression-era works created by WPA artists, as well as other local artists of the time. The exhibit opens to the public at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, followed by a 7:30 p.m. presentation by Key West historian Tom Hambright.

On Nov. 15, the Heritage House will launch the “Key West WPA Walking Tour,” the first in a series of tours to be offered every second Saturday through February. Lead by local history guides, the walking tour will lead participants on a journey through Old Town Key West to discover the works of WPA artists and the stories behind the art. The tours will commence at 10 a.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 15, Dec. 13, Jan. 10 and Feb 14 at Key West Heritage House, 410 Caroline St. The cost is $20. Tickets will be sold the morning of each tour.

On May 6, 1935, the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) was created to help provide economic relief to the citizens of the United States who were suffering through the Great Depression. The Federal Art Project was one of the divisions of the W.P.A. It operated from August 29, 1935 until June 30, 1943. Reputed to have created more than 200,000 separate works. FAP’s primary goals were to employ out-of-work artists and to provide art for non-federal government buildings: schools, hospitals, libraries and the like.

Sculpture Key West 2009 is shaping up to be the most cohesive and challenging exhibition to date. This annual outdoor exhibition, now in its 14th year, opens January 18, 2009, and showcases 32 works by local, national and international artists on the tropical island of Key West, Florida.

Known primarily as an offbeat tourist destination and as the home of reclusive writers like Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams, Key West has recently achieved some critical attention from the artworld at large with this outdoor exhibition of contemporary and cutting-edge sculpture. Sculpture Key West has been working quietly to build a solid reputation of artistic excellence and is attracting world-class curators and artists.

The 2009 show features installations that were selected by a jury led by Shamim M. Momin, Associate Curator of the Whitney Museum in New York and co-curator of the 2008 Whitney Biennial. Additional jury members were Robert Chambers, internationally renowned artist living in Miami; Vera Vasek, SKW board member and artist; Eric Holowacz, Executive Director of The Studios of Key West; and Gavin McKiernan, a Key West arts professional.

This year’s jury selected works with a similar overall theme to give the exhibition a sense of cohesion. As conceived by Momin, sculptures that are site-specific or site-dependent tend to be the most interesting and successful. Works that are environmental, ethereal, ephemeral, works that are constructed on site, or that reference the history of the site are the focus of this year’s exhibition. Many of them will cease to exist after the show is over.

The majority of the artworks will be installed at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, which opens March 1 and West Martello Tower, which opens Jan 18, 2009. Some additional works will be installed at other locations around the island, including Bayview Pond (past home of the Loch Ness Monster) and the White Street Pier. The show closes on April 18, 2009, at all locations.

Some highlights for the 2009 exhibition include: A tower of Cuban bread, a giant glowing halo, silver “ghost flags,” a tower of salt (to go with the bread?), a giant line demonstrating the tangent to the earth, a fence in the shape of the detainment center at Guantanamo Bay, a hot-pink trailer filled with snarling dogs and a glowing pink hole in Bayview Pond.

Interesting trends are in evidence among the selected sculptures. This year’s show is heavier on video and audio installations, works that light up at night, glow, ring, buzz, and hum. Works that melt, disappear, get eaten or get lost and found are also common, and perhaps will cease to exist before the show closes.

Returning Key West favorites John Martini, Lauren P. McAloon, and Anja Marais are all making large and dramatic works for Fort Taylor. Artists hail from Florida and ten other states (including New York, Alabama, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Tennessee and Wisconsin) as well as two international participants, from Paris and Berlin.

Notable returning and new artists are: Mike Ross (Brooklyn) Cameron Gainer (Minneapolis), Lori Nozick (New York), Steven Durow (New Orleans), Karlis Rekevics (Brooklyn), Andrea Stanislav (Minneapolis), Diana Sphungin (Brooklyn), Blane De St Croix (Boca Raton), Roy Staab (Wisconsin), Richard Medlock (Miami), Karen McCoy (Hartford, CT). Twenty-four are new to the exhibition, eleven artists are returning. Four sculptures will be made by artist collaborative teams.

Power Boat Racing Enthusiasts…

The Super Boat World Championships will be held in Key West the week of November 2nd through the 9th. There are three (3) race days scheduled, with three races each day. The first race day is on Wednesday the 5th, the second race day is on Friday, the 7th, and the final race day is on Sunday the 9th.

The “Race Village” will be staged at the “TRUMAN ANNEX”, which is a large waterfront property located at the west end of Southard Street. These facilities will be used to house the DRY PITS, WET PITS, HOT PITS (LAUNCHING), PRESS FACILITIES, CONCESSIONS, GENERAL ADMISSION, and HOSPITALITY TENTS, along with a prime view of the Start /Finish line.

Consider a VIP pass which admits you to the VIP hospitality tent, all cocktail parties and the event site (wet pits, dry pits, concession and vendor areas). For complete details visit www.superboat.com.

Also consider watching from the FURY catamaran, positioned at the end of the race course straight. You will view the super boats approaching at full speed as they make their turn around the catamaran. “Feel the roaring thunder as these high power super machines race by at speeds of over 100 miles per hour.”

Other recommended viewing areas include Fort Zachary Taylor State Park and various Key West harborfront hotels that line the course.

Multihull fleet continues to grow with the popularity of this course.”

and 4 seconds set in 2007 by Stars & Stripes, the Custom 60 owned by Steve and Scott Liebel
(Bradenton, Fla.).

A skippers meeting and cocktail party takes place January 13 at Lauderdale Yacht Club, site of this
year’s Race Headquarters. The start is at 1300 hours on January 14, with the awards scheduled for
January 16 in Key West and hosted by Kelly’s Caribbean. The Turtle Kraals Restaurant Bar will

My first visit to Key West was when I was 4 years old. My father was in the Navy Reserves and we would visit Key West for a month every year for a few years. After that time I continued to visit once or twice a year on school holidays every year until I graduated from college. After college, my wife and I move to the keys. We lived their for eight years, moving away when our son (a “conch”) was five. It has been 10 years since I moved away and this past holiday season I visited for the first time in eight years. I miss Key West. I have decided to create this blog about key west to keep up with what is happening there and to provide my guidance for visitors to key west. I hope to get feedback from these visitors, so I have some new ideas for my next visit to the keys!

My objective is to provide unbiased information and links to tourist related businesses. I hope to get comments and photos from others with useful information that everyone can benefit from. I reserve the right to refuse listings & links to any one.

I hope you can benefit from my unique perspective as a tourist & a local.

We drove down to Key West and stayed at the old Hilton, now the Westin, down by Mallery Square. We got a great deal thanks to Diane Schmidt, Maria’s old boss at the Casa Marina (Now GM of all the Starwood properties in KW). It was definitely great to be back in Key West after 8 years. It’s nice to know what there is to do and how to get around. We took Alex on the Conch Tour Train so he would learn some things about the city where he was born. Thanks Kevin for the free tickets! We ate dinner at Margaritaville Cafe and Kyushu Japanese Restaurant. For lunch, we had Cuban Mix sandwiches “All The Way” at Sandy’s Cafe and Paradise Cafe. For breakfast we ate at Croissants De France, the restaurant one morning and take-out pastries the next…Yum! We watched a sunset on a partly cloudy evening and I participated in the activities with the street performers. Maria & I made it to a bunch of bars looking for good entertainment, but couldn’t find any… not even at Hogs Breath. Rick’s upstairs was still closed from hurricane damage, but we made it up there for 5 minutes to lookout over Duval St and Sloppy Joes Bar. We also made it to the top of the La Concha for a night time view of the city, as well as the next day with Alex. The Casa Marina was just opening again after 2 years from hurricane damage and we heard the Reach was permanently closed. We didn’t particularly like the renovations at the Casa. We looked for “big fish” in the water at the pier house, but the lights were out, maybe because they were doing some renovations above the restaurant. We did have some conch chowder there, but it was bad! Major gastrointestinal discomfort… Yuck! We went to the Red Barn Theatre to see if we could see a play, but we missed the show by a day. We walked up and down Duval 10+ times and managed to stop for some Sorbet at Flamingo Crossing (I like the cuban coffee ice cream and grapefruit sorbet). Although they don’t have as nice as stores on Duval Street as they used to 25 years ago, we picked up some nice placemats at Fast Buck Freddies. We drove by Jimmy Buffett’s old house and our old rental house on Riviera canal. We showed Alex the condos at 1800 Atlantic and Key West by the Sea, as well as his first house in Sugarloaf. We drove by lots of homes with Christmas lights… somewhere around 10th street… but they didn’t seem quite as big and bright as they used to. Overall, a lot was the same and yet a lot has changed. Hard to believe they can still keep building so much on such a small island. Oh and the old county offices, on stock island, where I worked were demolished…gone…nothing but grass (kind of like that old drive-in theatre)! Noticed the Conchs got a new high school, Benihana closed, and the old Key Wester was replaced with a time-share.
